HAMPTON — A man died in a house fire Thursday night that was apparently started by a cigarette.
The 45-year-old man was identified as James Greenhagan.
The fire, on Galveston Court in the city's Fox Hill section, was reported just before 11 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes and quickly extinguished the blaze, which was contained to the man's second-floor bedroom. Hampton fire Capt. Maurice Wilson said the man was "apparently overcome by smoke" and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire remains under investigation, but Wilson said preliminary evidence suggests "an improperly discarded cigarette" started the fire. The fire was ruled accidental Friday night.
The other two occupants of the home, identified as the man's mother and sister, were downstairs at the time of the fire and were not injured.
