Landlords Protect Tenants From Secondhand Smoke

Several Tehama County landlords have been teaming up with Public Health staff to protect their tenants from the dangers of secondhand smoke. They, as well as their residents, are reaping the benefits from this collaboration.

More than 84 percent of California adults do not smoke, according to a release issued by Tehama County Public Health. Most Californians are aware of the health hazards of secondhand smoke cigarettes and wish to be protected from it. However, many apartment owners are not aware that they have a right to designate all or part of an apartment building or complex as smoke-free.

Smoke-free apartments are less costly to maintain and may be cheaper to insure. Tenants in both subsidized and market-rate housing deserve to be protected from exposure to secondhand smoke, the release said.

According to the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resource Board, a smoker's home may have nicotine levels that are on average 30 times higher than a non-smoker's home. This exposure is especially dangerous for young children and babies, and can cause many physical problems as they grow up.

Traditionally, tenants have been allowed to smoke cigarettes in their apartments or in common areas. Times have changed, and people now acknowledge that smoking cigarettes is hazardous not only to the smoker's health but to the health of those breathing in the secondhand smoke.
