Liberal Arts College Going Smoke-Free

Franklin College, in an effort to provide a healthy, comfortable and productive environment on campus, will become smoke-free and cigarettes-free effective July 1, 2011.

The policy applies to all faculty, staff, students and visitors on the campus. Smoking and cigarettes use will be prohibited within the boundaries of college property, including private vehicles parked or operated on the property.

"We are committed to promoting and enhancing the physical, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual and environmental wellness of our community," said Jay Moseley, Franklin College president. "Discouraging smoking cigarettes and cigarettes use is a part of that commitment."

Programming is being developed to assist in the transition to the new policy. Both employees and students will be provided free access to Indiana's buy cigarettes Quitline, smoking cigarettes cessation classes, a 'quit kit' and support from the campus counseling center and Partnership for a Healthier Johnson County. All employees will have access to the Employee Assistance Program. Employees enrolled in the college's medical insurance program will be given additional assistance through their benefit package.

The new policy follows the recent launch of the Wellness Program on campus designed to empower employees to make responsible and positive choices while creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sodexo, the college's food service, has begun offering 'healthy plates' as a meal option in the dining area. Each meal is 500 calories or less. Both the Wellness Program and the new menu choices have been very popular with faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Founded in 1834, Franklin College is a residential four-year undergraduate liberal arts institution with a scenic, wooded campus located 20 minutes south of downtown Indianapolis. The college prepares men and women for significant careers through the liberal arts, offering its 1,060 students 36 majors, including biology, business, education and journalism. In 1842, the college began admitting women, becoming the first coeducational institution in Indiana and the seventh in the nation. Franklin College maintains a voluntary association with the American Baptist Churches USA.
