No Smoking In Kingston Parks

Smokers are no longer welcome in any park owned by the City of Kingston as of Tuesday night when the Common Council voted to ban smoking cigarettes it its parks in an attempt to limit its overall impact on children in the community.

The city had already banned smoking cigarettes from within 50 feet of City Hall and a few other specific buildings, said Council President James Noble, but now it has taken the initiative a step further in order to encourage healthy environments for children and adults to be in.

“The entire footprint of the park will now be prohibited from smoking cigarettes,” he said explaining that the rationale is to set a good example for children. “If they see adults smoking cigarettes, you don’t want to encourage that, you want to try and be a role model, plus you don’t want second hand smoke cigarettes which is a killer also.”

According to Director of buy cigarette online Free Action Coalition (TFAC) of Ulster County, Ellen Reinhard, Tuesday’s vote was a major victory for the city’s youth.

“Eighty percent of Ulster County residents support this initiative,” said Reinhard, “even smokers will comply because smokers don’t want to smoke cigarettes around kids.”

Another concern for smoking cigarettes in parks is the amount of cigarette butts that children are exposed to, Noble said.
