Smoking Rate Above National Average

Tennessee's smoking cigarettes rate is well above the national average.

The National Center for Health Statistics said 24 percent of Tennessee's adults smoke, compared to the national rate of 15 percent.

Williamson County has the lowest percentage of smokers at 15 percent. Jefferson, Lauderdale and Monroe counties all had the highest rate of 38 percent.

Doctors say every pack of cheap cigarettes smoked knocks three hours off one's lifespan.

Nashville Ranked 37 For Healthy Cities

Nashville has some work to do to become a healthier city.

The American College of Sports Medicine released its fitness index Monday, ranking Nashville 37 out of 50 cities on the list.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul is tops, and Oklahoma City is at the bottom.

The list is based on many factors, such as obesity and smoking cigarettes rates, percentage of people who exercise and availability of parks, walking trails and farmers markets.
